Do any users actually use linux?

Which of you users out there actually use linux (any flavour), and how often?

I dont, and never. Actually, did try puppy linux once on a laptop, but that was a one-off

Try using an ubuntu (my favourite disto) live disk. It doesn't put anything on your computer at all. It just serves as a way of testing it out.

I would, but this isnt my computer, so I dont think Id be looked upon too kindly if I did. That and Im quite happy with boring old xp.

Ubuntu Linux is great but it's not the sort of thing you can readily get into as a windows user. Ubuntu 9.04 is my only OS and windows is ancient history for me, it feels good. A lot of the time I forget I'm in a minority. No BSOD but you have to get used to a machine with [multiple] personality disorders.

As I said before, the live disk doesnt make any changes to your computer AT ALL. It is completely seperate. It doesn't touch anything on your hard drives.

And Ben, multiple doesn't even come close to describing the personality disorders. But thats the benefit of ubuntu. It forces you to learn. You saw yesterday how mine decided that it was going to fix its self randomly.

Hm... Well, not being such a computer-whizz, would it be like on my sisters laptop where at the start screen you get the option of which OS to use kinda?

Im not actually gonna go and change it anytime soon by the way, just curious as all. Mind you curiosity killed the cat, and I like cats muchly, so this isnt such good news... Dead me + Dead cat = Bad times :/

If you really are curious then what you can do is install ubuntu as a "program" using an installer called wubi. Wubi does all the work for you, from downloading and installing, to setting up partitions and applying basic configuration settings. The best part about it is, if you get sick of having ubuntu on your computer and want rid of it, you simply uninstall it using windows as you would any other program.

Nah but in all seriousness, Yes i use Ubuntu as a sole OS but hand to heart I can't recommend it to anybody. It's pretty and it feels good not being on windows but I've had far more trouble since I made the switch than I ever did in a couple of years of windows. So for the advanced user it's a pain and for the average user it's too much work.

On the flip side, I don't regret using it for a second. So I dunno...

Yeah but look how purdy? It's gotta count for something? Linux is a learning experience. If your just going to sit on the internet all day then stick with windows. But if you want to have fun, and learn your way about a computer system, choose linux. There will be blood, sweat and tears but it is all worth it in the end?

Oh yeah it's worth it. It is fun and when it works, my god does it work.

All I'm saying is that with it's complexities and it's frequent mood swings, I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending it.

That should give you a rough idea. But it misses out a LOT of features... Hell there was nothing on fire in that, no rain, no snow, no aquariums, etc.

yeah. it only seems to be the sound systems that don't work right on it.

Tried Ubuntu (Feisty Fawn I think) but could never get my wireless card to work, and, I mean, what's the point of a computer without the internet? (Ethernet cables give me the fear.)

Well to be fair we are a long way from fiesty now? Jaunty works fine for all my wireless cards?

Am now running Moblin on my Netbook.
It's super sexy but in Beta so it's terribly glitchy. I want to like it so badly though and i'm just submitting ever error I find. I think it runs Fedora Linux.
